ACCC launches informative app for shoppers

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has launched a basic app that gives smartphone users the ability to check refund, warranty, lay-by, and product claim laws on an iOS or Android device.

The goal of the 'ACCC Shopper' app is to answer commonly-asked questions about these four elements of retail, particularly throughout the frantic Christmas retail season.

"Simple disputes over returns, refunds or replacements often leave shoppers confused about their rights," ACCC deputy chair, Delia Rickard, said. "The ACCC Shopper app will help to take the worry out of Christmas shopping."

Once downloaded for free from either the Apple App Store or Google Play, users can tap through to whichever category they have a question about, then follow further links to hone into the appropriate area and response.

In addition, users can store photographs of receipts as proof of purchase on their device for future reference.

It also has a 'My Items' tab that allows users to input lay-by details, for example, and set reminders around payments and collection, and so on.
