Android device updates: Sprint LG G4 update to Android Marshmallow rolls out

18.12.2015
Sprint’s LG G4 is joining a very exclusive club: non-Nexus phones with Android Marshmallow.

It was the highlight in a week that showed us the winter doldrums have set in for software updates. Hopefully after a nice holiday nap, phone makers and carriers will start churning out the Marshmallow again.

Each week, we compile all the major software updates to hit the Android ecosystem, including phones and tablets on U.S. carriers, unlocked phones, Android Wear smartwatches, and Android TV devices. Making sure your device is running the latest available software is a good housekeeping practice, ensuring you have the latest features with fewer bugs and gaping security holes.

LG G4: Here’s a lovely Christmas miracle for you: Marshmallow is on its way to your LG G4. Our review found it to be a solid device, and the latest version of Android should make it that much sweeter. Sprint says you should see an over-the-air update, so be on the lookout for it.

Moto X (2014): It appears there’s some Marshmallow headed across the pond. Several readers alerted Android Police their devices received the Android Marshmallow update on last year’s Moto X. Motorola often rolls out Marshmallow overseas first before bringing it stateside (thanks, carriers), so if you have a variant of the Moto X it may not be long before you get Android 6.0.

December update: Marshmallow keeps creeping along, now up to .5 percent in the latest numbers from Google. Of course that’s less than Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich, but sometimes you need to look on the bright side.

Lollipop made a decent leap, now running on nearly 30 percent of phones and tablets. With KitKat still hanging in there at 36 percent, developers still need to support at least Android 4.4 and above to get their apps on the majority of devices.
