Capita acquires data storage specialist S3

Outsourcing firm Capita has expanded its data storage capabilities with the acquisition of Basingstoke-based specialist, Solid State Solutions (S3).

S3 offers a range of data storage and storage management services on-premise and via its Tier 3+ data centre in Farnborough, Hampshire. This includes data protection software, big data analytics and backup 'as a service'.

The business counts the British Library, TSB, University of Winchester and construction firm Fitzpatrick among its 300 private and public sector customers.

Following the acquisition for an undisclosed fee, S3 will sit within Capita IT Enterprise Services' technology solutions division.

"Data storage is becoming increasingly important for our clients - they want a solution which not only offers guaranteed security but also flexibility, accessibility and value," said Peter Hands, executive director of Capita IT Enterprise Services.

"S3 prides itself on its ability to understand a business quickly and identify key operational requirements."

The acquisition follows a string of recent buys by Capita during 2014. This includes Irish business process outsourcing firm SouthWestern, software provider Retain International, and specialist security reseller Network Technology Solutions.

It has also snapped up mobile and smart device software house AMT for £82 million, and networking and connectivity services provider Updata for £80 million, while Capita also expanded its presence in Germany, acquiring specialist customer management company tricontes for an undisclosed sum.

Last year the company spent a total of £271 million on 13 acquisitions under former chief executive Paul Pindar.

In separate news, Stockton-based IT infrastructure firm Onyx as acquired data centre firm Knowledge IT for £10 million.

"The Knowledge IT team has a great reputation for delivering these services and this deal will make the Onyx propositions and reach stronger for both sets of customers."
