goCatch to pilot Mint Payments' mPOS system

Taxi booking and payments app, goCatch, has inked an agreement with Mint Payments to take its payment terminals to its taxi market.

An initial one month pilot phase will see part of goCatch’s 35,000 registered taxi drivers use Mint’s mPOS terminals across Sydney. This will be the first time that goCatch will be targeting the processing of card present transactions via an in-cab payments terminal.

The new mPOS system features a pocket-sized card reader that uses the taxi driver’s smart phone or tablet as the EFTPOS machine. It supports all of the major cards, tap-and-go technology, chip and PIN-based debit and credit card payments. It can also be self-installed.

Taxi drivers will earn a commission from fares processed through the terminals. They can also earn 10 ‘goPoints’ for every dollar transacted through the terminal to increase their driver status. High status drivers will then get the chance to bid on more lucrative jobs.

goCatch CEO, Ned Moorfield, said the pilot addressed a huge slice of the taxi market for the app developer.

“We know that more fares are being booked through goCatch, but this pilot with Mint has the potential to develop into a new revenue line for us,” he said. “Rolling out mobile payment terminals enables us to capture some of that revenue while at the same time, providing our drivers with a payments solution in their taxis.”
