HP to support the changing role of IT

17.06.2015
The role of IT is changing and trends such as mobility, IoT, and Webscale have been amongst the drivers of that alteration, according to HP South-Pacific servers and converged systems general manager, Raj Thakur.

He claimed IT is transforming from being something in the back-end and running processes and business outcomes to one that is offering new products, services, marketplaces and customer experiences.

And the barriers between IT and business is blurring.

"When we talk about the new style of business, IT is enabling it to deliver business outcomes in a much different way -- in a frontal role rather than a supporting role. The pressures on IT to be part of that new style of business is important," Thakur said.

As such, he highlighted four key transformation areas it will be embarking on to help customers along this path of change. These include transforming to a hybrid infrastructure, protecting the digital enterprise, enabling workforce productivity, and empowering the data of an organisation.

"In the past, you would have heard of us talk about Cloud, and mobility and security. The agenda has moved on to helping customers through that transformative journey.

"When you talk about provisioning infrastructure, it sounds very simple but it isn't. You've got to look at what kind of compute you need, what kind of storage you need, how your network is going to work, how are you going to manage this, do you need back-up, and if you've got the capacity to handle these workloads. That's a complex process," he said.

In line with this, the company announced the launch of some new solutions -- its OneView v2.0. Converged System 700, Converged System 500/900 for SAP HANA, and the Converged System 200-HC family.

According to Thakur, the channel has a huge part to play in the launch of these devices and in the future focus of HP. He claimed the solutions can be offered as a service, giving customers more flexibility in choice.

"Our partners and customers can provide these solutions as a service. They can provision them quickly; it could be in our datacentre, or theirs or in a channel partner's datacentre. We will lead the way, and our channel follows along," he said.

HP storage South-Pacific general manager, Paul Shaw, said HP will embark on further enablement initiatives to help its channel through this process.

"It's multi-faceted. We've got a training and skills agenda around these key transformation areas so the channel can understand how it can participate in this. There's also certification and training in each of these platforms.

"And then, we've got regular market orientation webinars where we give our partners insights into what's happening in the marketplace, what we're seeing with customers, etc. We also have a solution architect program, where we have these skilled solution architects in front of customers," he added.
