Intel pumps $60 million into Chinese drone maker Yuneec

26.08.2015
Intel has invested more than US$60 million in Yuneec International, a Chinese aviation company and drone maker, as the companies strike up a relationship to develop new products.

Intel has previously put money into Airware and PrecisionHawk, but the Yuneec deal marks its largest investment in a drone company.

The investment underscores Intel's growing interest in drones as potential computing platforms using its processors.

"At Intel we believe in a smart and connected world. And one of the best ways to bring that smart and connected world to everyone and everywhere has been drones," said Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, in a video announcing the deal on Wednesday.

Other companies like Amazon and Google are developing drones of their own as they seek new ways to deliver items to consumers.

Yuneec makes a range of drones built for aerial photography and imaging. Its technology also powers manned electric aircraft.

An Intel spokesman declined to comment further on products that might be developed through the collaboration.
