Motorola Moto X 2015 UK release date, price and specs rumours: Third-gen Moto X to launch next week

22.07.2015
Motorola has sent out invites to an event happening in London, New York and Sao Paulo, signing off with 'XGX. Moto.' We're confident that it will be a launch event for the firm's new phones, specifically all-new Moto G and Moto X models. See also: 2015 Moto G release date, specs and price rumours

There are plenty of new phones to be excited about in 2015 but although it has never enjoyed the popularity of flagship phones from other manufacturers, we've always like the Moto X. It was the first phone that allowed you to customise it before buying, and was extremely well built. It had no expandable storage, however, and we hope Motorola will address that with the third-generation Moto X. Read our 2nd-gen Moto X review

Motorola Moto X 2015 UK rumours: specs

There have been relatively few leaks about the forthcoming Moto X, but some suggest it will be called the Moto X Sport - at least in some regions. Alternatively, Motorola might launch two new models, one standard and one ruggedised or water- and dust-resistant.

The rumour mill also tells us the new Moto X will have a fingerprint scanner, which wouldn't surprise us as most of the next-generation Android phones will have one in order to use Google Pay.

Cameras are likely to be upgraded from the previous model's 13Mp main snapper to 16Mp. At the front, expect a camera with a 5Mp sensor. The Moto X has never has optical stabilisation for its main camera, but that could change with this new model. Since the older phone could capture 4K video, the new one is sure to follow suit.

What's not clear at all is which processor Motorola has chosen. Leaks show a quad-core 1.5GHz CPU, but this seems very unlikely. Other leaks suggest a Snapdragon 808 chip running at 1.8GHz.

There's nothing concrete on screen specs either. Most leaks seem to point to the same 5.2in AMOLED display as before, but they swing between a Quad HD resolution and sticking with Full HD. If it did have a 2560x1440 resolution, which we think is the most likely option, this equates to a pixel density of 565ppi. The original Moto X (in 2013) had a 4.7in 720p screen, while the 2014 version grew to 5.2in and had a Full HD resolution.

Further speculation points to 4GB of RAM, a single SIM slot, Android 5.1.1 and a maximum internal storage capacity of 64GB.

Motorola Moto X 2015 UK rumours: Release date

At the event on 28 July we expect to find out the exact release date, but we expect it to be available to buy later this summer - probably in September.
