Samsung's Gear VR for Galaxy S6 goes on sale 18 June

Samsung is bolstering its position in the virtual reality market with the release of its second-generation Gear VR.

The Gear VR Innovator Edition was developed by pioneering virtual reality company Oculus specifically for Samsung's Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

Little time has passed between the first generation Gear VR, which works with a Galaxy Note 4 and was released in February, and the second generation model.

A number of changes have been made to the Innovator Edition VR headset. It works with the 5.1-inch Galaxy S6 series and not the 5.7-inch Note 4, which has made a 15 per cent reduction in size possible.

The Galaxy S6's display has an improved 577 pixel-per-inch density. This will make it harder to spot individual pixels and will help deliver a VR experience that is more immersive.

The decrease in size and the ability to power the Gear VR with a USB port will make it easier to use for longer periods of time.

It can be used to view photos, watch movies or play virtual reality games downloaded from Oculus' content store.

Preorders for the headset open today with pricing set at $299. It will be available from Samsung's Experience retail store from 18 June.
