VMware and Google buddy up in the cloud
VMware released the general availability of its object storage service for its vCloud Air public cloud. The service is offered in two flavors, one of which is powered on the back-end by Google Cloud Storage. Customers also have the choice of using EMC’s ViPR software-defined storage service.

The partnership between VMware and Google was first announced earlier this year when VMware rolled out its ‘one cloud, any app, any device’ strategy, but it has matured and now customers can launch and manage unstructured data in Google’s public cloud through their VMware management software.
The move benefits both companies. For VMware, it gives the company an almost instant massively scalable object storage service for its customers – a feature that any major cloud provider needs to compete in the market today. For Google, it gives the company a foot in the door to VMware’s enterprise customers.
Both of these companies are looking to compete with the big guns of the cloud industry – Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. But building out the massive data center scale of their platforms is unrealistic for VMware to do in the short-term. Google meanwhile has been building up its partnerships with companies to get Google Cloud Platform in front of enterprise customers. Google has also announced major partnerships with PriceWaterhouse and other regional systems integrators to penetrate this market.
Google’s got the scale and VMware’s got the enterprise connections. It’s a match made in the clouds.
