YotaPhone 2 release date, price and specs UK: E-paper Android smartphone launches tonight

03.12.2014
The YotaPhone is a dual-screen smartphone from Russian manufacturer Yota Devices and the firm is about to launch a new generation. Here's everything you need to know about the YotaPhone 2 including release date, price and specifications UK. Updated 03/12/14. See also: Best smartphones 2014.

If you haven't heard of it, the YotaPhone is an innovative smartphone which has not one, but two screens. On the front is a regular AMOLED display and on the back is an e-ink display which we're used to seeing on eReaders. The original YotaPhone was a bit of an unattractive brick and never launched properly in the UK but you'll want to take a look at the YotaPhone 2.

We saw the YotaPhone 2 back in March at MWC 2014 and you can read our hands-on review.

"The typical user picks up and activates their smartphone more than 150 times a day. Why Because users worry that messages or information they need or want are hidden behind their phone's black screen," said Vlad Martynov, chief executive of Yota Devices.

"Yota Devices proved that there is an antidote to the always-dark smartphone screen. The future of smartphones is always-on displays allowing users real-time access to information without turning off the real world and disrupting the people around you."

YotaPhone 2: Release date and price in the UK

YotaPhone is holding a launch event for the YotaPhone 2 in London tonight (3 December) so we'll find out specific details then. However, the smartphone will be available this month as that's something the firm already announced - see the main image above.

In terms of price, Android Police reports that it will cost 495 Euro placing it around the £400 which could be right but we think it will be a little more than that in sterling. The original YotaPhone launched at £419 and is available right now for £319 so the new version is bound to be at least £80 on top of that.

YotaPhone 2 specifications

With the YotaPhone 2 already in display many months ago, we don't need to wait until the launch event tonight to let you know the specifications.

The main reason(s) to go for this phone are the two screen. The front is bigger than its predecessor at 5in, it's AMOLED and uses a Full HD resolution. The e-paper display on the back is slightly smaller at 4.7in and is always on. It has a resolution of 540 x 960 (qHD). Both screens have a Gorilla Glass 3 front.

The device runs Android 4.4 KitKat and core specs include a 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. It also has an 8 Mp rear camera and a 2.1 Mp front camera.

On the wireless front is 11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, A-GPS and 4G LTE via a nano-SIM slot. The battery is 2500mAh and the YotaPhone 2 has wireless charging built in.
