Valve launches surprise Steam Lunar New Year Sale

05.02.2016
Surprise! A new, never-before-seen Steam Sale popped up today in honor of the Lunar New Year. “Thousands of games” are on sale from now until February 12, at Winter Sale-esque prices.

Highlights include Grand Theft Auto V at $40, Fallout 4 at $40, Crypt of the Necrodancer at $5, and The Talos Principle at $10. None of this year’s big games (The Witness, Rise of the Tomb Raider, XCOM 2, et cetera) have hit the discount bin yet, but there’s plenty from last year to keep you tided over until summer—and you can get XCOM: Enemy Unknown plus the Enemy Within expansion for ten bucks, bundled. Not bad.

Also included in the Lunar New Year Sale: An honest-to-Gabe meta-game. Instead of presenting you with the stock Recommendations queue, Valve has built out a choose-your-own-adventure starring a monkey. It’s pretty simple—tell the monkey to drive, and Valve recommends driving games—but a bit more interesting than the Winter Sale at least.

There's no Flash or Community Choice sales though, and presumably Valve is sticking to its new “Sale prices stay the same for the entire duration” policy—thus the “Highlighted Deals” moniker on the front page instead of the old “Daily Deals.” In other words: If you see something you want, get it. It’s not going any lower before the sale ends.

As I said, the sale runs from now until February 12 at 10 A.M.
