Moto X Play may morph into Verizon's Droid Maxx 2
According to a Phandroid report, one of Motorola’s newest smartphones will get rebranded as the Droid Maxx 2, a follow-up to the long-lasting device from Verizon’s angry robot series.
The Moto X Play launched this summer as the more budget-friendly cousin of the Moto X Style, though only the latter will come to the U.S. as the Moto X Pure Edition. The Moto X Play is being sold to international buyers.
The precise specs of the Moto X Play may or may not get reconfigured as part of a Verizon rebrand. The device as announced by Motorola included a 5.5-inch full HD display, 21-megapixel rear-facing camera, dual LED flash, and a substantial 3,650mAh battery.
The report suggests a Droid Maxx 2 model would include wireless charging (something not found on the Moto X Pure Edition) and a plastic OLED display, which Verizon plans to market as “unbreakable.”
It’s the same type of technology that LG used to bend its LG G4 display.
The story behind the story: The Droid series is a Verizon exclusive, with a very specific aesthetic and marketing effort. The “Droid Does” motto has always appealed to those who are antithetical to the iPhone, instead preferring a device with long battery life and a more robust build quality. This move would help get Motorola’s Moto X Play into the U.S. and give Verizon a new and improved Droid to sell in stores.
