How to get your Amazon credit from Apple's ebook price-fixing settlement

21.06.2016
You might have a few extra dollars to spend on Amazon this week, all courtesy of Apple.

On Tuesday, Amazon started issuing refunds as part of Apple’s price-fixing settlement. If you purchased a qualifying ebook from Amazon, you will be automatically receiving credits in your account. All you need to do is sign in to your Amazon.com account and click on this link to see how much you got.

“Eligible customers do not need to do anything to receive these credits. If you are eligible, we have already calculated your credit for you and added it to your Amazon account,” according to Amazon’s webpage explaining the settlement.

The credits will show up as a gift card and automatically applied to future purchases via Amazon.com or the Amazon apps. You can use the credits towards any purchase on Amazon, not just ebooks. However, the credits cannot be applied towards Amazon gift cards or certain subscriptions. You will have until 11:59 pm PDT on June 24, 2017, to use the credits. Eligible customers received an email explaining the credits on Tuesday.

To qualify for these credits, you must have purchased an ebook from Amazon between April 1, 2010, and May 21, 2012, and the ebook must have been published by Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Penguin, or Macmillan, or their subsidiaries. As part of the settlement, Apple paid $400 million back to ebook buyers, who will receive $6.93 for every purchase of a New York Times bestseller and $1.57 for every other ebook. This settlement applies to ebook purchases from other sellers, too, including Apple and Barnes & Noble. Credits from those sellers should be forthcoming.
