University of Oxford Bodleian Libraries receive Samsung technology donation
The Bodleian has recently redeveloped its Weston Library as a new home for its special collections, and the use of Samsung's digital technology will bring its extensive collections - including rare book, medieval manuscripts and major political archives - to "digital life", it says.
Samsung will provide devices and bespoke software in eight key areas of the library, enriching the interactive and digital experience within the space. The focus will be on installing digital screens throughout the library, with digital signage to help realise the library's digital ambition for its facilities and to help enhance reader resources. This includes allowing the general public as well as academics to experience the Bodleian's unique collections.
Customised technology will support researchers and readers whilst a unique tablet loan service will provide a flexible service to suit the mobile needs of visitors.
The development stage of the project will be completed by the end of this year, with the installation taking place in early 2015, in advance of the official opening of the Weston Library in March 2015.
Richard Ovenden, Bodley's librarian, said: "Samsung's gift will transform the way that visitors interact with the University of Oxford's world-class special collections. We are grateful for their professional collaboration and are excited to see how their technology will benefit the students, scholars and members of the public who use the new Weston Library."
The refurbishment of the Weston Library commenced in 2011, with the aim of improving the physical infrastructure and facilities to promote public access.
