Apple’s new Music Memos iOS app is for songwriters and musicians

20.01.2016
Apple on Wednesday unveiled Music Memos, a free iOS app for anyone who is interested in creating music. Like iOS’s Voice Memos app, the new Music Memos app uses the iPhone’s built-in microphone to record audio, but Music Memos records in a high-quality, uncompressed format.

Once you have your audio recorded, you can name, tag, and rate your clip. According to a statement released by Apple, Music Memos “can analyze rhythm and chords of acoustic guitar and piano recordings, and instantly add drums and a bass line to provide a virtual, customizable backing band that plays along to match the feel of your song.” Songwriters will appreciate Music Memos’ ability to provide basic notation that displays the chords that were played.

Music Memos also supports iCloud so that your recordings are available on other devices. The files can be opened in GarageBand (which was updated to version 2.1 on Wednesday) and Logic Pro X. Apple also said that the app allows for sharing via email or though Apple Music Connect.

Music Memos requires a iPhone 4S or later, or an iPad 2 or later.

Macworld has a hands-of with Music Memos in the works. Stay tuned.
