Apple TV App Store gets Top Charts section of popular apps

03.11.2015
The new Apple TV App Store is becoming more similar to the iOS App Store by the minute.

On Tuesday, several Apple TV users spotted that the new tvOS App Store now has a dedicated Top Charts section. Similar to the iOS App Store, the tvOS Top Charts includes top free apps, top paid apps, and top grossing apps.

When the fourth-generation Apple TV shipped last week with the all-new tvOS, it did not include a Top Charts section, presumably because Apple did not have enough user data to populate the charts.

As 9to5Mac noted, the top paid tvOS apps are currently games, new to the Apple TV. The top free apps are TV streaming apps from the likes of CBS and Showtime. Plex, a popular media player app, just launched on tvOS today.

Why this matters: Apple CEO Tim Cook has said, “Apps are the future of television.” If Apple is hoping the tvOS becomes as popular with developers and users as iOS has been, then it makes sense that a Top Charts section be included in the Apple TV App Store.

It’s interesting to see that gaming apps are popular Apple TV installs. Gaming certainly adds a new element to the Apple TV, but, as our colleague Andrew Hayward noted, it’s unlikely that hardcore gamers will forego getting an Xbox or PlayStation.
