Meet Ray, Misfit's super sleek new activity tracker

05.01.2016
Just months after releasing a second-gen version of its popular Shine activity tracker and then being acquired by Fossil, Misfit is aiming to take the spotlight at CES with a brand new fitness bracelet called Ray.

Ray doesn’t look like any activity tracker you’ve seen before. The body is a 38mm long cylindrical piece of aluminum, which can be attached to a variety of Misfit bands in materials like leather and silicone, or Misfit’s paracord bracelet. You can attach the aluminum body to your own chain or grosgrain ribbon to wear as a necklace.

Misfit calls the $100 Ray its most versatile tracker, because while it has the same accelerometer for tracking sleep and activity and the same vibration motor for notifications that the Shine 2 has, the Ray is much smaller and can be worn as a complement to other jewelry. Like Shine 2, Ray lacks a screen—its notifications are viewable as color-coded LED lights that you program in the Misfit Link app.

I tried Misfit Ray on just before CES began, and while I didn’t love the leather, silicone, or paracord band options Misfit designed for it, the slim activity tracker has potential (especially in rose gold). It looked like a piece of modular jewelry on my small wrist, and I appreciate that Misfit designed the Ray to be worn with other jewelry—most fitness bands are very obviously fitness bands, and look bizarre when worn with bracelets or watches. Even Misfit’s other trackers, despite their more fashion-forward approach, aren’t the most subtle. It seems unlikely that Misfit is already being influenced by Fossil’s design philosophy—Ray looks like an extension of what Misfit was already doing with its fitness-tracking line.

If you’re in the market for an affordable activity tracker that’s about as slim as it gets (and doesn’t require charging), Misfit Ray is available to preorder in rose gold and black starting today and will be sold in retail stores this spring.
