What are the top ‘Tech for Good' projects in the UK

30.07.2015
From today, the public have been invited to nominate the most inspiring uses of technology for social good for this year's 'Tech for Good' awards.

People have until 30 September to pick tech projects they would like to see recognised for their power to drive social good, be it in health, education, the environment or civil society.

They can suggest projects worthy of winning a place on the NT100 'power list', run by Nominet Trust, by filling in a short online form here.

Last year's 'Nominet Trust 100' list included an eye examination app, a 3D printed house, an iPhone malaria test, Google's driverless car, artificial prosthetics and a crowdsourced platform mapping sexual harassment in Egypt.

Jean Viry-Babel, CEO of malaria test xRapid, which made the list last year, said the nomination was "invaluable" to the company gaining its first round of seed funding and being accepted into an incubator.

""As a small company trying to solve a big social problem, the recognition we have gained through being shortlisted has helped us grow and succeed internationally," he said.

We are in a great place to enter Series A funding in September this year having officially diagnosed our first patient and secured our first commercial client in Papua New Guinea. Being shortlisted by the Nominet Trust 100 has been instrumental in this success," he added.

The NT100s, now in their third year, aim to 'celebrate technology's power to drive social change around the world', the trust said.

The final 100 will be chosen by a group of industry partners with social and tech sector expertise. The judging panel will be announced in early September then the list of 100 projects published in December, according to Nominet Trust.

The trust would particularly like to see nominations for tech for good projects in emerging markets and from developing nations, its director Vicki Hearn said.

"We have had a fantastic response to the NT100 for the last two years, which we are looking to build on this year as we extend its reach with the help of some very exciting partners," she added.
